A booker asked if I could do an hour clean for corporate and 90 minutes for cruises. I\u2019ve got about 40 clean. I already hurt myself recently when someone asked if I could headline an hour and I admitted I was more comfortable featuring. I <em data-start=\"320\" data-end=\"326\">want<\/em> to say yes &#8211; but I don\u2019t want to disappoint them or damage my reputation. At the same time, I\u2019m worried that if I say no, they won\u2019t call me again. And so does every <em>working <\/em>comic and talent booker who\u2019s been around the business for more than a few open mics. The only difference is <em>experience <\/em>makes it easier to <em data-start=\"733\" data-end=\"740\">trust<\/em> that answer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"952\"><strong>Here\u2019s the reality:<\/strong> nobody in this business wants to lose an opportunity. But one of the fastest ways to do exactly that is by overpromising &#8211; or worse, flat-out misrepresenting &#8211; what you can deliver.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"1129\">If a booker tells a client, \u201cThis comic can do a clean hour,\u201d that\u2019s not a suggestion. That\u2019s the product being sold. And if you say you can deliver it, it had better be true.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1167\"><strong>Because if it\u2019s not\u2026 everyone loses.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1364\">Now, there <em data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1185\">are<\/em> exceptions. Some performers can stretch with crowd work and genuinely carry an hour without a fully written set. If you\u2019ve done that successfully before, that\u2019s part of your act.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8342\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8342\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8342\" src=\"https:\/\/thecomedybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-12-at-7.38.24-PM-e1776037242548.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"152\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>It could be a bomb!<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1493\">But if you haven\u2019t? A high-paying corporate show or a first impression with a legitimate booker is not the place to experiment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1589\">For experienced comics, this is obvious. For those coming up, it\u2019s where temptation creeps in.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1791\">You\u2019re thinking: <em data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1652\">If I say no, I might lose the opportunity.<\/em> But here\u2019s the flip side: if you say yes and don\u2019t deliver, you won\u2019t just lose <em data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1741\">this<\/em> opportunity &#8211; you\u2019ll likely lose <em data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"1781\">future<\/em> ones too.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1793\" data-end=\"1812\">So, what\u2019s the move?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1829\"><strong>Tell the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"2073\">A legitimate booker will respect honesty far more than a shaky performance. If they reached out, it means they\u2019re already interested in working with you. This isn\u2019t a \u201cone strike and you\u2019re out\u201d situation &#8211; it\u2019s the beginning of a relationship.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2075\" data-end=\"2082\"><strong>Use it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2267\">Let them know what you <em data-start=\"2107\" data-end=\"2112\">can<\/em> do right now. Ask to be considered for shorter sets. Stay in touch. Most corporate shows don\u2019t even need an hour &#8211; 30 to 45 minutes is often the sweet spot.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2269\" data-end=\"2362\">And when you\u2019re ready to deliver a full hour &#8211; or 90 minutes &#8211; you circle back and let them know.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2393\"><strong>That\u2019s how careers are built.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Virtual (Zoom) Audition Videos | How To Be A Working Comic #19\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iviMawDReIo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2445\">Because this <em data-start=\"2408\" data-end=\"2412\">is<\/em> a career. And careers take time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2638\">Developing a strong, clean act for corporate and cruise work doesn\u2019t happen overnight. It takes stage time, discipline, and a clear understanding that there are no shortcuts in this business.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2640\" data-end=\"2831\">From the booker\u2019s side, I can tell you this: there\u2019s nothing worse than putting a performer on a show who doesn\u2019t deliver. The client is unhappy. The relationship takes a hit.
