It got really personal, and it honestly hurt. The people running the show asked if I wanted to go back on and get revenge, but I declined. Did I handle it the right way? \u2013 N.R.<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8270\" style=\"width: 312px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8270\" class=\"wp-image-8270 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecomedybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Mic-Drop-Light-e1768602224324.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Best revenge!<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hey N.R. &#8211; It sounds like the opening shot in a potential comedy war. Whether you want to crawl into the comedy trenches (a common comedy term \u2014 not mine) with this loudmouth depends on two things:<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Your onstage personality \u2014 your comic voice<br data-start=\"725\" data-end=\"728\" \/>\u2022 How you want to be seen onstage <em data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"767\">and<\/em> offstage in this business<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"1036\"><strong>Maybe I\u2019m naive<\/strong>, but after a few decades working with comedians, I\u2019ve found this business to be far more supportive than people think. Sure, there are jerks \u2014 real pains in the butt \u2014 but I don\u2019t know any career path that\u2019s immune from that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1347\">When this kind of behavior happens, it\u2019s usually fueled by jealousy, ego, or a power trip. And here\u2019s the irony: in my experience, the more power someone actually has in the business, the more supportive they tend to be of newer talent. That goes for comedians, bookers, and behind-the-scenes decision-makers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8272\" style=\"width: 131px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8272\" class=\"wp-image-8272 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thecomedybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-16-at-5.27.11-PM-e1768602479459.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Disbelief?<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1482\">(I can practically feel the disbelief from some readers right now. This may turn into a future FAQ \u2014 I\u2019ll let that thought marinate.)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1484\" data-end=\"1649\"><strong>For now, here\u2019s the real issue:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1484\" data-end=\"1649\">Who are <em data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1531\">you<\/em> onstage, and how do you want to be perceived by the people you work with \u2014 other comics and the people who hire them?<\/p>\n<p>Comedians who are genuine friends tear into each other onstage all the time. That can be hilarious. At the NYC Improv, we could run a microphone into the men\u2019s room and hold it over a flushing toilet when a friend\u2019s joke bombed. An unprovoked attack is almost always about making <em data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2152\">him<\/em> look better at <em data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2174\">your<\/em> expense \u2014 jealousy, ego, or both.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2289\"><strong>There are two ways to handle this, and the right choice depends on who you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2291\" data-end=\"2654\">If you\u2019re the kind of comedian who can verbally dismantle someone \u2014 truly dismantle them \u2014 then by all means, go for it. A skilled <strong>insult comic<\/strong> doesn\u2019t absorb cheap shots; they return them with interest. Think Nikki Glaser, Marc Maron, Wanda Sykes, Dave Attell, Jeff Ross. An insult comic worth their weight can turn a heckler \u2014 or a fellow comic \u2014 into roadkill.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2656\" data-end=\"2701\"><strong>If that\u2019s you, next time: aim for the throat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2703\" data-end=\"2813\">But if that\u2019s <em data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"2722\">not<\/em> your voice \u2014 onstage or in life \u2014 then you absolutely did the right thing by walking away.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"3098\">Let this guy burn his own reputation. Comics don\u2019t want to work with someone known for cheap shots. And bookers? They want the least amount of drama possible. Speaking from experience as a booker, I\u2019ve passed on very funny non-headliners simply because they were a pain to deal with.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3100\" data-end=\"3197\"><strong>If someone else is just as funny \u2014 and easier to work with \u2014 that\u2019s who gets the gig. If someone chasing the same goal doesn\u2019t like you, you\u2019re probably doing something right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want revenge?<\/strong><br data-start=\"3377\" data-end=\"3380\" \/>Get more laughs.<br data-start=\"3396\" data-end=\"3399\" \/>That leads to more bookings.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3429\" data-end=\"3625\">Use this moment as fuel. If your work ethic and focus pay off, maybe someday this loudmouth will be parking cars outside a comedy club, ripping into his coworkers \u2014 while you\u2019re inside headlining.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3627\" data-end=\"3642\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Make it happen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4099\" data-end=\"4168\">Thanks for reading and as always &#8211;
